Tall Bearded Iris watering

How much water do my iris need?
In Colorado water can be in short supply. We are semi-arid, meaning we only get about 15 inches of moisture a year, including our snowfall. Remember, our snow is champagne powder, so there's very little moisture content associated with the snow. Snow cover is not a bad thing. It acts as an insulator and allows the soil to stay moist avoiding winter desiccation of the plant. Colorado clay soils are very heavy and retain moisture for a long period of time. Bearded iris will not tolerate “wet feet” so to avoid many problems, make sure your plants have good drainage. In wetter climates, plant in raised beds or on a mound.
